Lidl GB has confirmed that its first ever store in Great Dunmow will open on Thursday 8th October. The local community is invited to join for the grand opening celebrations from 7:55am. There’ll be a ribbon cutting ceremony with the Mayor to officially mark Lidl as the newest member of the community.
This opening marks the end of a careful planning process designed to ensure the new store is a perfect fit for the area. Beyond the shelves, the site has been designed with rooftop solar panels to generate up to 25% of the store’s electricity requirements, to ensure it is a positive addition for the community.
The new store will also offer 2 rapid electric vehicle chargers which, following the discounter’s latest announcement, could save EV drivers approximately £529 annually by using the Lidl Plus app for their charging needs, following a tariff reduction to just 59p/kWh2.
In a boost to the local economy, the store has created up to 40 new jobs. Recruitment focused heavily on hiring people who live locally, ensuring the team serving shoppers are part of the fabric of Great Dunmow.

Lidl GB’s commitment to Great Dunmow goes beyond the checkout. In partnership with Neighbourly, the store will redistribute surplus food to local charities and food banks through the Feed it Back scheme, ensuring fresh produce reaches those who need it most.
With a 1,529m² sales area, shoppers will find everything they need for their weekly shop, including the UK’s No.1 Supermarket Bakery1 and the famous ‘Middle of Lidl’ aisle. To celebrate the opening, early birds will be treated to complimentary food sampling and exclusive deals on the Lidl Plus app. The store will be open 8am – 10pm Monday to Saturday, and 10am – 4pm on Sunday.
