Spencer Group to Build £28.5m Waterbeach Rail Station for Growing Community

Spencer Group has been appointed to construct a new £28.5 million rail station in Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire, as part of plans to support the town’s growth. The development follows the planned construction of up to 11,000 new homes, which is expected to more than double the size of the community.

The new station will replace the existing Waterbeach Station on the Cambridge to Ely railway line and is jointly funded by the Greater Cambridge Partnership and Homes England. Spencer Rail Engineering will manage the design and build, including enabling works, minor track adjustments, and the main station construction.

The project will feature two fully accessible platforms, a footbridge with lifts, and improved integration with walking, cycling, and bus connections. In addition, a new car park with capacity for up to 280 vehicles will be provided to support station users.

Construction is expected to begin in autumn 2026, with completion targeted for 2028. The design phase is now underway, led by Spencer Rail Engineering’s project teams.

Senior project manager Matt Lee said: “Spencer Rail Engineering has a strong track record of delivering projects across all rail environments, including at stations, and we’re excited to get started on delivering this project, which is the key to unlocking further development and growth in this area. This project requires an excellent working relationship between ourselves, the Greater Cambridge Partnership and wider partners, and a strong collaborative approach, which is something we really pride ourselves on in everything we do.”
